09 Feb 2016. My name is Rex Hodges, I am a Life Support and Wreckage Investigator for
the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA). Our mission is to provide the
fullest possible accounting for our missing personnel to their families and
the nation. We deploy all over the world locating and recovering our
missing service members. A large part of that mission involves travel to
Southeast Asia where we locate and excavate crashed Vietnam War era aircraft
crash sites. We also travel to other remote parts of the world recovering
WWII, Korean War, and Cold War losses. One of the LSI's primary jobs is to
identify the type, model, and if possible the tail number of the aircraft
once we have located a crash site.
We currently have teams in Laos conducting recovery operations. One of
those teams are excavating a suspected OV-1 crash site. While excavating
the team has recovered some .30 cal ammunition, and some of the background
we have for this aircraft indicates that pilots had M-2 carbines issued.
My questions are: Is this possible? If so, were these carried in the
cockpit? And would they have been with the pilots if they would have
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

09/04/15 I am a Veterans Service Officer in Duluth Minnesota working with Ronald Nyholm, Army 1965-1968, served in Vietnam 1966-1968. He was assigned 73rd Surveillance Aircraft Company at Vung Tau. He is filing a claim with the Veterans Affairs and needs to verify a stressor for his PTSD.
Ronald states in 1967 he was supporting Special Forces mission in the Elephant Ear and the 0V-1 Mohawk was hit, Ronald ejected and lived but the pilot (an Army Major) ejected and the Major was found in his ejection seat in the river, the Major died.
Ronald is trying to find anyone who can recall the incident and write a “buddy statement” about the incident. He remembers the Navy sent a boat to retrieve Ronald and search for the pilot. They did not find the pilot until later because they had to send divers to locate him.
Ronald’s telephone # is 218-721-3010. He can be called or emailed. Thanks for all your assistance.
